Supernatural Season 5 Finale--Swan Song--Jared
One of the things I forgot to mention in my "thoughts" post last night was Jared as Sam/Lucifer.  His performance took my breath away.  In the moment that his facial expression changed as he gazed at the first hole the Horsemen rings opened up, I could see his Lucifer from episode 5.04 (The End).  Then he turned around and that small dimple appeared on his left cheek, and that sealed the deal.  He didn't have to say a word.  I knew it was Lucifer in control.

But it was the scene in the mirror that really let Jared shine.

Shooting a scene like that is incredibly difficult, at best.  It's hard to play against yourself when there's no one else in the scene.  But Jared, in my opinion, "knocked it out of the park".  I didn't for one moment think of it as a scene where an actor was playing two characters.  I was watching Sam and Lucifer.

I think the scene was beautifully filmed and directed, but that wouldn't have been of much use if Jared hadn't performed so exquisitely.  Even in the extreme close-ups in much of that scene, I didn't see any false notes.

I was also impressed with the scenes in the cemetery.  Jared managed to still maintain the menace of Lucifer while showing his vulnerability.  You could see his pain, as he tried to convince Michael that they didn't have to fight.  Even more poignantly when his brother called him a monster.  But in the instant Lucifer said, "I'd like to see you try", you knew he was still just as dangerous.

Things became even more heartbreaking as Lucifer attacked Dean.  The part that really got to me personally began where Sam/Lucifer spotted the army guy in the ashtray of the Impala and we saw Sam regain control, to the part where the hole was open again, and he was preparing to jump.  So many emotions flickered over his face--regret, fear, determination, anguish, love...  Just typing that makes me tear up again.  Oh, Sammy...  Jared, you made me believe it.

I see a lot of folks who praise Jensen's acting, while simultaneously criticizing Jared's.  I think that, at least sometimes, they forget that the character of Sam requires more subtlety than the character of Dean.  A more subdued performance with subtle nuances can be overlooked by an audience, particularly when there's a flashy character like Dean in the scene.  Not that Jensen doesn't play Dean exceedingly well.  He most certainly does.  I just think that people don't always appreciate the challenge that Sam is as a character.

That being said, I think both men deserve kudos for their work.  They breathe life into the Winchester Brothers.  They make them seem real.  I'd like to see them both recognized for their talent.  I'm just singling out Jared today, because I was so impressed with his performance.

Thank you for writing this. Like you said, people in fandom always seem to focus on Jensen's superb acting skills, and they overlook Jared, or they act like he's horrible. I've never understood that mentality. Playing Sam would be exceedingly difficult, especially for a happy and bubbly guy like Jared. But his mastery of the subtlety of facial expressions and voice inflections is far beyond most actors in the industry. I'm so glad that after this episode, people are finally taking notice of his talent. I was completely blown away. The scene with the mirrors... I don't even have words! He's such a talented actor, and it makes me all sorts of happy that he's getting recognition!

Thanks so much for this. I sometimes feel very alone in seeing Jared's talent. I'm so glad someone else appreciates his performance as well.

Most of the time, his Sam moments are about hiding how he's feeling. As an actor, trying to convey what your character is feeling while trying to convey that the character is trying to hide it at the same time is very difficult. (You get a cookie if you understood that on the first read-through. *grin*)

Jared finally getting some recognition makes me all sorts of happy too.

BTW, you're the first person to comment on a post in my journal since I recently started posting. I wanted to say "thanks" for that. It's especially nice, since it was a comment on a post that is near and dear to my heart.

Wow! This got long. I guess it shows that I feel strongly about it. Also...I love your icon. I think Dean DOES approve. LOL!

I totally understood what you meant by that! Jared is quite a master of subtlety. =]

Trust me, we're not the only ones that appreciate his talent. I've met plenty of us, and there's more coming out of the woodwork after Swan Song. It's about time!

And no problem. It was my pleasure to comment on this! This is exactly how I feel, and it's nice to see someone else feeling the same way!
